Earth Day 🌎

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! I love this time of year as the earth appears to come alive again, everything turns green and beautiful wild flowers appear. Cow Parsley is one of my favourite with its tiny flowers and fractal structure.

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour

William Blake’s poem ‘Augries of Innocence’ suggests that profound beauty and meaning can be found in the smallest and most ordinary things.

Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future. There is lots more information on their website at

Earth is a huge ecosystem and as humans we have a symbiotic relationship with all living things. It can feel hopeless with endless reports of environmental destruction and global warming. However, on an individual level here are a few things we can do;

🌎 If you have a garden or any outdoor green space grow plants that attract bees and other pollinators. Consider a ‘no mow May’ or preferably longer to provide a feast for pollinators and help tackle pollution. There is more information on this website
🌍 Buy less – we really don’t need so much stuff!
🌎 Buy better – buy things that last longer, can be repaired, re-sold or recycled. Buy from companies with strong ethical and environmental policies.
🌍 Eat better – whilst not everyone wants to be vegan or vegetarian, it is a fact that eating more plants and less animal products produces less green-house gases and needs less land. A United Nations report on ‘Healthy diets for a healthier planet’ states that about a third of human-caused greenhouse emissions is linked to food.

There are many amazing organisations promoting positive change and Earth Day is just one of them. Paper Tree is a member of 1% for the Planet which is a global network with thousands of businesses and environmental organizations working together to support people and the planet.

I hope that you can take some time today to enjoy this incredible and beautiful planet we call Earth.
