Thank you to Your Perfect Wedding Day for this lovely feature on their blog today. Your Perfect Wedding Day is a fantastic new wedding resource, supplier directory and blog.
Today we chat with Ann-Marie of Paper Tree in our Afternoon tea interview series where we find out about wedding suppliers showcased on our site and how it all began.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how it all started? I have always loved flowers and really enjoy making things and being creative. However, I was also interested in business and initially took a degree in economics, following this I worked in accountancy then retail at ‘Harrods’ . I needed a creative outlet so continued to make things, I made little topiary trees as Christmas decorations for friends then individual flower pots for place settings for a wedding. I decided to try selling at craft fairs and this progressed to selling to shops and exhibiting at the ‘Top Drawer’ trade show at Earls Court in London. I also love to travel and discovered beautiful paper flowers in Thailand. I now import and design these as well as make my own designs and paper roses.
What do you love most about what you do? Paper Tree enables me to combine business and creativity and I feel I am very lucky to enjoy my work so much. Running a business is all consuming and I do work very hard but love the independence of working for myself. I am a naturally creative person and love making beautiful things.
How would you describe your style and what makes you different? Paper Trees’ products are beautifully handcrafted from eco-friendly paper. Paper flowers are made from either recycled or ‘saa paper’ which is made from the bark of the mulberry tree. The tree naturally sheds its’ bark which can be made into paper without destroying the tree. Paper Tree takes pride in being as environmentally friendly as possible and are members of 1% for the Planet, they give 1% of their sales to environmental organisations. Paper Tree also offers a bespoke service on some of their products and are happy to adapt designs to requirements. Ann-Marie designed miniature pear trees for a Gucci promotion and cake decorations for Duchy Originals. Their paper rose petals have enjoyed starring roles in the films ‘Alexander’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’.
What is the process when it comes to ordering? All of the designs can be seen on Paper Tree’s website, for designs that are made to order allow up to 4 weeks.
What do you love most about weddings? The people, a fantastic opportunity to get together all the people most special to the couple. And of course the party!
Finally, any plans for the future? This is a small company and I want to stay with the values of individuality and creativity as the business slowly grows. I’d like to introduce more ways for people to be creative themselves and am always conscious that the business should have a positive effect environmentally.
Thank you to Ann-Marie of Paper Tree for taking time out to speak with us.
